New UK travel authorization requirement for US travelers in 2025
By UK Visas and Immigration
Beginning January 8, 2025, a new travel requirement will be in effect for US travelers visiting the United Kingdom. Travelers from 49 non-European Union countries, including the United States, must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering or transiting through the UK. Once approved, the ETA is electronically linked to your passport and remains valid for two years. With an ETA, travelers can:
- Stay in the UK for up to six months for business, academic purposes, tourism, or visiting friends and family.
- Spend up to three months in the UK under the Creative Worker visa concession.
- Transit through or within the UK.
How to Apply for an ETA:
You can apply through the UK ETA website or the UK ETA mobile app, available in the App Store. To complete the application, you’ll need:
- A valid passport.
- Access to your email (during travel as well).
- A debit/credit card for payment.
Applications can be submitted via the UK ETA website or through the UK ETA mobile app, available in the App Store.
Important Notes:
- Travelers without an approved ETA will be denied boarding, including for flights transiting through UK airports.
- The application process typically takes about three business days for approval.
- Keep a copy of your approval email (digital or printed) during travel in case of any issues.
- This requirement applies to both personal and business travel.
If you plan to travel to the UK or transit through a UK airport in the next two months, ensure you apply for your ETA well in advance.
